WHAT IS USNG?
The USNG is the national standard coordinate system of the United States that is designed for ground-based operations. This fits into what the fire service does routinely. It can be used daily in dispatch information to identify locations of interest that are unique, combined with or in place of a street address. It also can be used by fire inspectors and preplan teams to mark hazards; utility shutoffs; fire risers; hydrants; and, with an easy-to-use set of characters devoid of degrees, minutes, decimals, or seconds.
USNG is also mandated for use in multiple states during disasters when the paradigm of street address referencing is blown away, burned over, flooded, and so on. USNG may seem new, but it has origins to Military Grid Reference System (MGRS), circa 1949, and is known to U.S. military veterans simply as “grid.” See the complete article by Al Studt here at FireEngineering.com.
WHO IS USNG FLORIDA?
USNG Florida is a group of GIS and Emergency Responders who understand the power of the USNG to clearly communicate location information in times of crisis. Whether using maps, GPS units, or smartphones the USNG can quickly and accurately communicate your location. It is our plan to have all local, county, and state government entities fully adopt and implement the USNG as the common “language of location” in emergency communications.
Training and Education
Classroom training is available at your location in many parts of the United States. More details will be made available about that in the near future. Our website is new so we will be updating it as time and resources permit. Thank You.
